A Nantgarw plate circa 1818-20

Sold for £ 3,360 (US$ 4,631) inc. premium
A Nantgarw plate
circa 1818-20
from the Brace service, the border moulded with panels edged with C-scrolls and flower sprays, decorated in London, probably by the Bradleys, the panels painted with fruits, flower sprays and a bird, a large mixed flower spray in the centre, with a gilt dentil rim, 21.8cm, impressed upper case Nant-garw CW mark

Footnotes

  • This plate is from the service known as 'The Brace Service', after a square dish with the same decorative scheme presented to the Rt. Hon. William Brace, P.C., recorded and illustrated by W D John (1948), illustration 31B, and p. 108. John attributes the decoration to Robins and Randall, however, Oliver Fairclough convincingly re-attributes it to the Bradley workshop on the strength of a plate decorated in a similar style but with a central bird, signed 'J Bradley & Co. 47 Pall-mall London'. See Oliver Fairclough, The London China Trade 1900-1830, ECC Trans., Vol. 16, pt. 2, pp 207-8 for information about the Bradleys, a firm of London china and glass retailers and china decorators. The signed plate is illustrated fig. 14 and colour plate XIIa, and a cream tureen, cover and stand from the Brace service in the National Museum and Gallery of Wales is fig. 16
