Lot 50*
A Worcester â018Blind Earlâ019 dish circa 1758-62

Sold for £ 1,792 (US$ 2,244) inc. premium
A Worcester ‘Blind Earl’ dish
circa 1758-62
moulded with rose leaf sprays, the handle a rose bud stalk, decorated with a kakiemon-inspired design of a dragon descending in flames through the clouds upon two scurrying red crabs, one looking up at it, flanked by grasses and a flowering peony plant, all with gilt details, a dense border of iron red leaves reserved with gilt flower-heads at the rim, 16.2cm (6 3/8in) (chip to tip of one rose bud glazed over during manufacture, minor wear to enamels)

Footnotes

  • Zorensky catalogue fig. 125. An armorial teabowl and saucer with the same pattern was in the Zorensky Collection, part 1, lot 63. Blind Earl dishes were apparently made to accompany tea services and as a result the moulded rose sprays usually bear no relationship to the painted decoration. This painted design is after a Meissen version of a Japanese pattern
