circa 1758
of strap-fluted shape, reserved with scroll-edged panels painted with the 'Pu Tai' pattern, the pot-bellied figure of Pu Tai seated by a rocky mound, his two attendants to his left, one holding a ball, the other seated with a lotus flower, some details and the rims picked out in gold, the cover decorated to match with the seated attendant and Pu Tai, 12.8cm (5 in) (chip to cover and spout tip restored) (2)

  • Zorensky catalogue, fig. 116. Provenance: Simon Spero Exhibition, 1990, no. 26. This pattern, copied directly from Chinese porcelain, was in use from circa 1757-66. Pu Tai was a Buddhist monk who lived in the Tang dynasty. His image as a jovial character was adopted in Chinese art as the popular representation of Buddha himself. Teapots of this shape were mostly made in blue and white. Enamelled versions are very rare

Buyers' Premium and Charges

Buyer's Premium Rates
27.5% on the first £2,500 of the hammer price;
25% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £2,500 up to and including £300,000;
20% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £300,000 up to and including £3,000,000;
and 13.9% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £3,000,000.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
