Lot 289*
A Worcester coffee cup circa 1753-55

Sold for £ 860 (US$ 1,058) inc. premium
A Worcester coffee cup
circa 1753-55
of lobed and reeded shape, applied with a scroll handle with pointed thumbrest, painted in blue with the 'Prunus Branch Bird' pattern of two flowering prunus branches flanking a bird in flight and an insect, 6cm (2 3/8in), workman's mark (shallow rim chip)

Footnotes

  • Provenance: The Watney Collection, pt. 1, sold 22nd September, 1999, lot 162. The difficulty Worcester experienced with painted blue decoration on moulded shapes is clearly shown here. To avoid the blurring effect, moulded blue and white pieces were usually only decorated around the rim. This rare pattern is discussed by Branyan, French and Sandon, I.C.13.
