Lot 204*
An important Worcester figure of a gardener circa 1770

Sold for £ 9,799 (US$ 12,184) inc. premium
An important Worcester figure of a gardener
circa 1770
leaning on a spade and holding a flowerpot, standing in front of an elaborate bocage awash with yellow blossom and green leaves with 'hot cross bun buds', two sprigs of puce flowers by his feet on the high-footed rococo base, the gardener wearing a puce jacket edged in turquoise with bright 'Dry Blue' apron and striped breeches, the base heightened with gilding and further turquoise enamel, 22.2cm (8 3/4in), marked with a numeral 8 in red enamel (minor restoration to bocage branches and some leaf and flower loss, chips to fingers of his left hand, nozzle lacking with some repainting to the nozzle-support)

Footnotes

  • Zorensky catalogue, fig. 391. Provenance: the Rous Lench collection, sold at Sotheby's 1 July 1986, lot 254. Exhibited at the English Ceramic Circle Exhibition, 1977, fig. 173. The influence of Bow is seen clearly in this ambitious bocage group, almost certainly the work of John Toulouse. Worcester figures with this elaborate bocage are exceptionally rare. Another gardener in the Dyson Perrins Collection in the Museum of Worcester Porcelain retains its original tulip-shaped candle nozzle, see John Sandon, Dictionary of Worcester Porcelain, p. 155 and H Rissik Marshall, Coloured Worcester Porcelain, pl. 20, fig. 385. The construction of the bocage is similar to the group of canaries sold in the Zorensky Collection Part 1, lot 232
