  • Veterinary Surgeon Major J.B.W.Skoulding qualified in 1852 and was gazetted as a Veterinary Surgeon in the Royal Artillery in November 1855, he served in the Crimea between January and June 1856 (no medal). He went to India in August 1857 and landed in Bombay in December 1857 and was ordered to go to the Bombay Presidency to join No3 Field Battery B Brigade R.A. at Poonah (Paget's Battery). He served with No 3 Battery in India until March 1960 being present at the attack and capture of Nurgoond, he acted as Staff Officer to Lt Col Sir G.Malcolm who commanded the field force in that expedition, Skoulding was Mentioned in Despatches for this. He arrivd in China in May 1860 where he served until 1862 and was present at the actions of Sinho, Tung Bu and the taking of the Taku Forts. He went out to India again in 1865 and travelled extensively, he was ordered home sick to England in April 1877. He returned to India in December 1877. In October 1879 he received orders to proceed to Peshawar for service in the Afghan War. He took over 92 mules and 26 camels as part of the Base Hospital for the sick animals of the Kyber Line Transport. After his service in Afghanistan he returned to India and then to England in 1884. He eventually died on 11.1.1925.

    The lot comes with a variety of original documentation including a handwritten report covering his service career with particular reference to his poor treatment when it came to promotion etc.

Photograph of him in uniform; Royal Artillery sword by Hamburger Rogers and Co; a small watercolour of various troops; Regulations for the Dress and Appointments, Royal Artillery 1855 (missing cover); varous correspondence and letters of recommendation; Chinese Visa 1861; Seat of War in Northern Afghanistan 1878-79-80; Seat of War in Northern Afghanistan April 1880; Memorandum on Supply and Transport Arrangements and Operations during the campaign in Northern Afghanistan and the Kuram Valley in 1879-80.
