A German 22-Bore Wheel-lock Sporting Rifle

With heavy swamped octagonal sighted barrel rifled with eight grooves, grooved along the breech for sighting, and struck in front of the back-sight with brass-lined maker's mark (Neue Støckel 2899) between the date '1683', grooved tang, flat lock with further maker's mark between the date '1682', sliding pan-cover, top jaw and cock-spring each with gilt-brass acorn-shaped finial, gilt-brass wheel-cover cast and pierced with flowering foliage and a putto-mask, gilt-brass pan-cover release button and bridle to the cock-spring, each with cast putto-mask, fruitwood full stock with fluted fore-end (some splits and repairs) carved with overlapping leaves along each side, the butt carved with foliage and panels of imitation staghorn, studded with steel nails and inlaid with steel wire scrollwork including a coat-of-arms on the cheekpiece, sliding patch-box cover en suite, iron mounts including indented trigger-guard with foliate finials, rosette-shaped side-nail plates, butt-plate with button, iron fore-end cap, and original iron-mounted ramrod
