The Jaques Souriau pieces being pen and ink sketches depicting scenes inside Oflag XVIIA and including the prisoner's choir, dinner time, the prisoners relaxing, and the deserted village outside the camp, together with approximately 130 watercolours and pencil sketches by Christian Caillard, executed in the same camp, and being studies of individual prisoners, mostly portraits, all with official Oflag stamps verso, some signed.

Footnotes

  • Christian Caillard studied at the Academie Billoul in Paris and was noted for his "colour strong" images. After the war Caillard became a follower of the "Poetic Reality" (Peintres de la Realite Poetique) society and co-exhibited with Oudot and Planson at a large exhibition in Paris.

    Jaques Souriau studied Law and Fine Arts at Nancy and soon beagn work as an illustrator for the Masson publishing house. After the war Souriau began to focus on Comic illustrations and became one of France's foremost exponents of this form of art.

Buyers' Premium and Charges

Buyer's Premium Rates
27.5% on the first £2,500 of the hammer price;
25% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £2,500 up to and including £300,000;
20% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £300,000 up to and including £3,000,000;
and 13.9% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £3,000,000.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
