Lot 313
A rare and unusual ‘Asprey Safe’ cocktail cabinet

CHF 16,000 - 18,000
US$ 18,000 - 20,000
A rare and unusual ‘Asprey Safe’ cocktail cabinet
in the form of a metal safe, the deep claret lacquered metal body resting on angular block feet, the door with typical 'T' handle, lock with shield escutcheon and Art Deco hinges opening to reveal fitted interior with glass racks, bottle holders and double jigger, original Asprey label, the interior illuminating automatically when door is opened. Height 23 inches (58 cms). English circa 1930's.
Note: This amusing piece dates from the 1930's when Asprey were Britain's - and possibly the world's - leading designers, manufacturers and retailers of luxury novelty items in silver and other materials. The novelty cocktail shakers they introduced in 1932 - Thirst Extinguisher, Dumb-Bells, Ship's Lanterns etc - were costly and produced in very small quantities rendering them very scarce and highly sought-after today. The 'Safe' cocktail cabinet is most certainly in the same category, and is the perfect accessory to complement such pieces. Only two other examples are recorded.
