Saleroom notices

  • The sitter has been identified as Maximilian II Emanuel (1662-1726), Elector of Bavaria (1679-1705) and (1714-26). Maximilian, son of Ferdinand Maria. In 1683 he aided the Holy Roman Emperor in the battle against the Turks. In 1691 he became Governor of the Spanish Netherlands. He married 1stly in 1685, Marie Antonie of Austria. He married 2ndly in 1695, Therese Kunigunde, daughter of John III of Poland. He was awarded the Order of the Golden Fleece in 1692. The present lot appears to be based on a full-length portrait of the Elector, probably by his court painter Joseph Vivien.

25% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £10,000 up to and including £450,000;
20% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £450,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
