Footnotes

  • PROVENANCE:
Sir John Harrowing of Low Stakesby, Whitby, purchased between 1895-1937, and thence by family descent to the present owner

The inscription relating to the sitter's identity possibly reads: 'Portrait of Mrs D'Oyly -/née Susan Rushbrooke...' According to the list of portraits in Downman's sketch books from Butleigh Court, the artist made a drawing of a 'Mrs Doily, 1778, of - near Cambridge' (Second Series, Volume IV; see Dr. Williamson, John Downman, ARA, His Life and Works, London, 1907, p.liii).

Sir John Harrowing, who ran the shipping company founded by his father until just after the First World War, was an avid collector, much of his collection being sold at Christie's in 1962.
