Footnotes

  • The present drawing appears to be a preparatory sketch for the 1705 painting of Algernon Capel,in the National Portrait Gallery, London (NPG 3207), engraved by John Faber in the same year. Algernon (1670-1710) was the fifth but only surviving son of Arthur Capel, first Earl of Essex and his wife, Elizabeth Percy, daughter of the 10th Earl of Northumberland. Algernon became Gentleman to the Bedchamber of William III and accompanied him on all his military campaigns. He later became Constable of the Tower of London.
The brush and wash technique of the present drawing is comparable to several other Kneller drawings of the 1690s and 1710s, notably Boy as Cupid of 1705 in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London and Man in armour of c.1695 in the Henry E. Huntington Library and Art Gallery, San Marino.
