Footnotes

  • The vendor of this and the following lot is Bob Evans, a founding member of the Riot Squad. He first met Bowie in 1966 when the band shared the bill with him at the Marquee Club. Bob was impressed by David and, in March '67, invited him to join the Riot Squad. To his surprise, David agreed to front the band and rehearsals took place at the Swan pub, Tottenham and a house in Leytonstone, from which sessions these recordings derive. The band then played some twenty gigs, a list of which is available, beginning in Basildon, 17th March and ending at Leighton Buzzard, 2nd May. Before the appearance at Tile's, David walked up and down Oxford Street advertising the gig with a sandwich-board.
According to Evans, David transformed the group, both visually and musically, introducing the use of makeup and theatrics onstage: 'Thanks to his awareness of the scene in America, David put the Riot Squad ahead of the pack as the forerunners of Flower Power'.
The Riot Squad were originally a rhythm and blues outfit, put together by producer Larry Page in 1964. The drummer was Mitch Mitchell, who left in 1966 to join Georgie Fame's Blue Flames and thence the Jimi Hendrix Experience. After parting company with Page, the band then worked with legendary producer Joe Meek.

Please note: The recordings are offered for sale without copyright, broadcast rights, performers' consents or other reproduction rights. The buyer must obtain clearances and consents as may be necessary from the relevant parties.
