Footnotes

  • The following lots by Walter Hunt have come directly from the artist to the vendor's family.

Walter Hunt was a family friend, living nearby in Southfields. The owner of these pictures fondly recalls many hours spent in the company of this charming man.

The Hunt family had a small farm in South West London and the owner and his brother were frequent vistors both there and to Walter Hunt's large and well kept garden. On one memorable occasion Hunt took the boys to Regents Park Zoo in his motor car where they saw the exotic animals and rode on an elephant called Uncle Oujah.

The son of the artist Charles Hunt (1829-1900), and brother of Edgar, (1876-1953), Walter received no formal art training, but managed to sell a picture by the time he was thirteen. By the age of twenty he had exhibited his first work at the Royal Academy and exhibited annually there for the next eleven years.

His 1886 exhibit called 'Overmatched' was singled out by the Times reviewer as one of the 'cleverest' pictures in the exhibition. His exhibit of the previous year, 'Dog in the manger' was purchased by the Chantrey Fund establishing his reputation as one of the finest animal painters of his generation.

Hunt kept animals on the farm and would spend hours studying them to perfect his craft and whilst sometimes erring on the side of sentimentality, his rendition of calves and dogs is second to none. He died in 1941.
