Cooke (Thomas Fothergill)
Authorship of the Practical Electric Telegraph of Great Britain; or, the Brunel Award vindicated; in VII letters, containing extracts from the arbitration evidence of 1841, 4 lithographed plates, publisher's limp cloth, slightly shaken, bookplate and reference label on upper cover, 8vo, Simpkin, Marshall, 1868

Footnotes

  • Amongst the engineering controversies of the nineteenth century, that between Cooke and Wheatstone as to which of them invented the electric telegraph, was one of the most bitter and prolonged. In 1841 M.I. Brunel and J.F. Daniell had arbitrated between them but the acrimony rumbled on into the 1860's. The present book was written after Cooke and Wheatstone were jointly awarded the Society of Arts' Albert Gold Medal. It was written by Cooke's brother, Thomas, who felt that Wheatstone should renounce the award in recognition of Cooke's "acknowledged exclusive right" to the invention, and includes many of the documents relating to the controversy.
