Footnotes

  • The Toronto, Hamilton, Niagara, and St. Catherines Electro Magnetic Telegraph Company was Canada's first telegraph enterprise, incorporated in 1846. These three telegrams are the earliest known Canadian telegrams to our knowledge. The company was bought in 1852 by The Montreal Telegraph Company. American Samuel Porter built the line and connected it from Queenston, Ontario to Lewistown, New York by suspending a wire across the Niagara River. This was the first international cross-border telegraph connection (cf. Robert Dalton Harris and Diane Deblois in Crossing the U.S.-Canadian Border with Electric Medium), preceding the Dover to Calais submarine telegraph.
