Footnotes

  • This rare memorial to Charles I commemorates his trial and execution of 1649. The mica talcs included in the lot, illustrate his journey from trial, through to his stay in prison, being read the bible by Bishop Juxon and finally the execution itself.
As the King is shown wearing a blindfold for his execution, and it is documented that this was a privilege the king refused, it is probable that the set was painted in France or Holland. This would explain the small historical inaccuracies in the illustrated story.
Sets such as this would have used for amusement and education. This set is rare in illustrating an actual event as most mica sets of the period are concerned with fashion and depict standardised women in various states of dress.
