Footnotes

  • Ben Jonson was one of the most famous and successful playwrights and poets of his time. He is particularly remembered for his comedies, including Every Man in his Humour, Volpone, and The Alchemist. He was granted a pension by James I in 1616, and wrote a series of court masques under the patronage of Anne of Denmark, collaborating with the architect and designer Inigo Jones.
Jonson was buried in Westminster Abbey, with the inscription, "O Rare Ben Jonson", laid in the slab over his grave. It has been suggested that this could be read "Orare Ben Jonson" (pray for Ben Jonson), which would indicate a deathbed return to Catholicism.
The present lot is probably based on a portrait miniature of Jonson in the Royal Collection, Windsor.
