Lying at the foot of Blackdown, this farmhouse was once part of Lord Tennyson's Surrey estate. Behind it runs a little stream beside which the poet would often rest before he continued his walk.

When Allingham lived in nearby Witley, she and her husband were frequent visitors to Tennyson's hill-top home, and she often accompanied the poet and his dogs on long walks. It was on one of these rambles that the poet laureate took her to see this building which he thought might interest her. Allingham recalled that it was too muddy to get close enough to it the first time, so she returned in the early 1890s to paint it.
