Footnotes

  • Exhibited:
London, Fine Art Society, Surrey Cottages exhibition, March 1886, no.19.

    Literature:
Reproduced as an engraving in The Art Journal, 1988, p.201.

Although Helen Allingham will always be associated with her trademark cottage paintings, it is perhaps little realised that cottage interiors also became subjects of watercolours and provide a glimpse through the front door. The scene of 'The Cradle' was painted in Park Lane, Brook near the Allingham's Surrey home.

Indoor compositions are not unusual. In 1881, the artist produced some fine watercolours of the interior of Thomas Carlyle's Chelsea home, which is now owned by the National Trust and where her watercolours are displayed. Interior scenes of Whittington Court near Cheltenham and her own home in Surrey were also recorded in this way. It was said that Allingham painted interior scenes when the weather was not good enough to paint out of doors.
