Footnotes

  • John William Lindt emigrated to Australia in late 1862 and settled in the town of Grafton, New South Wales. While living there he produced a series of tableau photographs entitled "Australian Aboriginals". This collection consists of 31 different images (plus one which is a reverse image) of "Australian Aboriginals" and 5 images from a small series of "Australian Types", featuring colonial bush workers. The research of Ken Orchard shows that there are six other collections worldwide that hold a substantial number of photographs from the Australian Aboriginal series: Mitchell Library, Sydney (35 different images); The Smithsonian Institute, Washington DC (26); The National Library of Australia, Canberra (25); The Peabody Museum, Harvard University, Boston (25); The John Oxley Library, Brisbane (24) and The Clarence River Historical Society Grafton (23). This collection is the largest in private hands and a full catalogue list is available upon request.
