165.5cms The interior above the soundboard profusely decorated with sycamore and walnut marquetry incorporating repeated songbirds,in pairs and alone,of varying sizes,within acanthus thickets bordered by continuous peak and sphere margins with some contrasting scorching;the four and a quarter octave keyboard (72cms)from a bass B to a treble D of ebony with embossed leather arcades and "skunktail" accidentals,the lowest two divided in two,the walnut case of an aged light brown colour with pierced naturalistic brass accessories all on a later eighteenth century turned,pinned walnut stand.

  • Benjamin Slade was apprenticed to James Aland in 1684 and became Free of the Joiners'Company in 1698.He later worked with Joseph Tisseran,a French harpsichord maker who came to England in the 1690s.Slade is recorded in an advertisement in the London Courant for 21 August 1727 as "harpsichord maker in ordinary" to the Royal Household and probably worked in the west end of London rather than the City.
