c.1934 Jaguar SS2 1.6-Litre Special Roadster
Registration no. SH 5398
Chassis no. 21706
Engine no. DD3702FR
Previously a model name, ‘Jaguar’ replaced ‘SS’ as the marque name in 1945. William Lyons had founded the Swallow Sidecar Company in Blackpool in 1922, branching out into coachbuilding with a Swallow-bodied Austin Seven in 1926 before marque status arrived in October 1931 with the launch of the Standard-engined SS1 and SS2 coupes.
This SS2 has been re-bodied in the style of the SS90 sports roadster. Purchased by the vendor at auction in 1990, the vehicle at that time was described as retaining all its original running gear while benefiting from a thorough engine rebuild, including a re-bore, new pistons, re-ground crankshaft and new main and big-end bearings. The aluminium cylinder head had been skimmed to raise the compression ratio and new valves fitted, while twin SU carburettors improved the breathing. The chassis was reported as having been shortened by 12” and rebuilt with new steering box, kingpins and bushes throughout. The neat two-seat roadster coachwork is fabricated in 18-gauge aluminium and finished in traditional British Racing Green, while the dashboard boasts a comprehensive array of refurbished original instruments. While in present ownership new SS90-style wings have been fitted, further improving the appearance. This nicely executed Jaguar Special is offered with old-style green logbook, MoT to August 2005, current road fund licence and Swansea V5.
