1928 Bentley 3-Litre Tourer
Coachwork by Freestone & Webb

Chassis no. DN 1734
Engine no. DN 1736
Bentley 3-Litre chassis number ‘DN 1734’ was off test in October 1928 after being fitted with a saloon body by William Arnold, of Manchester. Its first owner was Mr A Sidebottom, of Ashton-under-Lyme, who kept the car until the outbreak of WW2. The Freestone & Webb touring body - from another car but of similar vintage - was fitted, it is believed, immediately post-war. ‘DN 1734’ had only three owners, all Bentley Drivers Club members, throughout the 1950s and 1960s until it was acquired by Anthony Boyce in 1967 and treated to a “very fine 12-month restoration” (BDC Review 1970). The car was pictured in the BDC Review of April 1970 bearing cherished plate ‘E 31’.
Mr Boyce sold the car eleven years later to W W ‘Bill’ Rogers, a fellow Club member, who maintained it at his own motor dealership in the West Country and ran the car until his death in 2003. The car has subsequently required very little attention, but the 1970s Zenith carburettor has been replaced by a pair of ‘sloper’ SUs and the correct vintage magnetos (refurbished) have been restored to it. Recognised specialists James E Pearce overhauled the body and fitted a new mohair hood, while extensive mechanical renovation has been undertaken by Tony Fabian at Blackmore Engineering. A new set of Blockley tyres has been fitted recently and the original registration mark ‘VM 5203’ recovered.
During the course of the current Club member’s ownership over £16,000 has been spent on maintenance, and the car is presented in ideal condition to be driven and enjoyed. It is only offered for sale because the vendor finds it difficult to enjoy such a car from his base in central London. Finished in red with black hide interior, the vehicle is offered with copy build sheets, ownership records, BDC Review clippings, current road fund licence, MoT to November 2005 and Swansea V5 registration document.
