1979 Aston Martin V8 Volante Series 1 Convertible
Registration no. GAG 730T
Chassis no. V8COR15080
Engine no. V/540/5080/S
Described by former Aston Martin Chairman Victor Gauntlett as, “a stylish thoroughbred, beautifully built, luxurious, fast and immensely safe,” the V8 was the Newport Pagnell firm’s most successful model ever, enjoying a record breaking production run lasting from 1969 to 1988, with 2,919 cars sold. The Aston Martin V8 survived the changes of ownership and financial upheavals of the 1970s, appearing in countless variants, one of the more exclusive being the Volante convertible. Produced in response to customers’ demands for such a car, the Volante first appeared in June 1978. In Series 1 form the model came with carburettor induction, and henceforth its mechanical specification would follow that of the equivalent V8 or Vantage saloon. Arguably the ultimate in soft-top luxury, the newcomer boasted a lined, power-operated hood which, when erected, endowed the walnut embellished interior with all the solidity and refinement associated with the saloon version. Road tested by Motor magazine in 1979, the “ultimate soft-top” recorded a 0-60mph time of 7.7 seconds and a top speed of 150mph, making the Aston Martin V8 Volante one of the world’s fastest-ever convertibles.
An original right-hand drive car subsequently converted to left-hand drive, this very early V8 Volante - chassis numbers ran from 15001 to 15849, a total of 849 cars - benefits from extensive refurbishment undertaken in May 2002, since when a mere 100 miles have been covered. Work carried out at this time included a repaint and re-trim, engine removal, top-end rebuild (including unleaded conversion), engine bay detailing, new clutch and service. Related invoices on file total £31,000. A desirable manual-transmission model, chassis number ‘15080’ is finished in blue with grey leather interior and presented in generally excellent condition. The vehicle is offered with current road fund licence, Swansea V5 registration document and MoT to October 2005.
