c.1990 Dax Cobra Roadster
Registration no. PUE 648M
Chassis no. 2R1639BW
Unlike the majority of Cobra replicas, which use a large-capacity Ford V8 engine like the original, this Dax is powered by a turbo-charged 2-litre Ford Cosworth 16-valve engine extensively prepared by Collins Performance Engineering - specialists in turbo-charged engines - and featuring a full-race cylinder head, competition injectors, BD10 camshafts and low-compression pistons to suit the Garrett T3 turbocharger. A Cosworth inter-cooler and Collins engine management ‘Powerchip’ enable this stupendous motor to produce around 300bhp at just one bar of boost - its current setting - while the maximum 1.8 bar equates to around 400bhp! Beneath the skin the Dax is conventional Cobra replica, employing a ladder chassis and Jaguar suspension components from the XJ6L donor car. The transmission consists of a five-speed Borg-Warner manual gearbox, special Collins-manufactured hydraulic clutch and 3.07:1 Jaguar limited-slip differential. Tested by Top Car magazine in June 1991, this actual Dax Cobra raced to 60mph in 5.74 seconds on its way to a top speed of 118.8mph.
Previously owned by the 1981 British Thoroughbred Sportscar Champion, this very special Cobra Replica was acquired by the vendor in July 2003 as a potentially most competitive hill-climb car, only for the subsequent purchase of a Lotus 11 to render it surplus to requirements. Not used while in the present ownership, it benefits from the installation of new fuel pumps (invoice available) and is presented in good condition throughout having covered a mere 2,411 miles from new. Finished in red with black leather interior, the car is offered with sundry invoices (including engine preparation), five expired MoTs (earliest 1991-1992), copy Top Car magazine article, MoT to November 2005 and Swansea V5 registration document.
