No less than 3,827 examples of the 20/25hp Rolls-Royce chassis left the Derby production lines, all destined for bespoke coachbuilders who vied eagerly for custom among the nobility and ‘old money’. Ownership of a Rolls-Royce had long been a social statement since the marque was dubbed as ‘The Best Car in the World’. The smaller and less expensive 20/25hp model brought Rolls-Royce products to a wider market, although there was no compromise in quality for the smaller, 3.7-litre, six-cylinder car.
Factory records confirm that GMU 29 was ordered in June 1932 and the car delivered to D.H. & A.H. Bloomer of Grimsby for their esteemed customer Mrs Treble of that town, reputedly a trawler operator, in whose name the Guarantee was issued on 2nd September 1932. It later passed to a lady neighbour and in the 1960’s is recorded in the Mansfield area where it was used as a taxi. It was rescued for preservation from a scrap yard for the princely sum of £80. In 1984 some £5,000 or so was spent with Ristes Motor Co. on a major engine and clutch overhaul, reconditioning the magneto and re-coring the radiator and extensive re-wiring (see invoice on file).
GMU 29 was acquired by the present owner in 1994 and has been regularly used, covering some 6,000 or so miles in this ownership. It is smartly presented in grey over black livery with beige leather upholstery to the front and beige cord to the rear compartment which features two occasional seats, sliding division and chauffeur communication system. The car is equipped with wheel discs, off-side mounted spare wheel, engine under-trays and proudly carries the Spirit of Ecstasy mascot. It is offered with a Swansea V5 document, old MoT’s, current MoT, road fund licence and copy Factory Chassis Card details.
