1914 Douglas 2.75hp Model V
Registration no. 8301 PE
Frame no. 16540
Engine no. 11077
Referred to as the ‘Light Touring’ model, this 350cc Douglas Model V has the two-speed, clutch-less transmission - gearchanges are made using the valve lifter - and comes fully equipped with acetylene lighting, bulb horn, luggage carrier and nickel plated fittings. A 1914 model, it was first road-registered in the 1950s when it was rebuilt by Mr Millar, an engineer from Bookham, Surrey, who had acquired it from a London cab driver after WW2. The machine has dropped handlebars (similar to those of the works racers), a racing exhaust system and improved porting (this bike is reported as noticeably faster than other similar models on the Pioneer Run) the presence of these competition features offering a possible clue to its origins and the reason for delayed registration.

Approximately five years ago the present owner stripped the machine and had the frame powder coated, while the fuel tank’s beautiful paintwork is by Lewis & Templeton. The magneto has been rewound and the carburettor overhauled by specialist Martin Bratby. Valve guides have been fitted to the cylinders (as standard, the valves run directly in the cylinders of Douglas veterans) together with new valves. Finished in the company’s traditional silver and blue with black cycle parts, the machine is offered with Pioneer Register Certificate no. 665 and Swansea V5 registration document.
