1947 Vincent 998cc Series B Rapide

1947 Vincent 998cc Series B Rapide
Registration no. GDG 339
Frame no. R2090
Engine no. F10AB/1/91
This Series B Rapide was sold new via Williams, of Cheltenham, and first registered ‘GDG 339’ in July 1947. We are advised that Vincent Owners Club records confirm that the frame and engine numbers match, this being one of the documented exceptions to the ‘1900 difference’ rule of thumb. Rapide engine numbers for 1946, the first year of Series B production, ranged from 3 - 19 and for 1947 from 20 - 400, making this machine with engine number ’91’ a very early Series B Rapide and a significant rediscovery. The machine left the Stevenage factory on 20th May 1947 and has remained unknown to the Vincent Owners Club since 1950.

‘GDG 339’ had several owners prior to 1959, as documented in the accompanying old-style logbook, and has been kept in dry storage since circa 1966 when its then owner - a Mr Cooper - dismantled it and rebuilt the engine. Invoices for parts supplied by Ross Motors Ltd, of Hinckley, are included in the sale together with an expired tax disc dated June 1967. The machine had a sidecar attached during the early 1960s and retains some of the mountings, while known deviations from factory specification - fitted in period - include Black Shadow carburettors and inlet manifolds and a Series C Girdraulic front fork, both of which modifications are considered desirable up-grades. The machine is believed substantially complete, with the obvious exception of the Miller headlight, which is missing. However, prior to bidding, prospective purchasers are advised to satisfy themselves with regard to the extent of the correctness, originality and completeness of the machine, which is sold strictly as viewed. An exciting opportunity to acquire an early Vincent Rapide - ripe for restoration - at an affordable price.
