Described by Der Motor-Kritik in 1928 as “The greatest master of the art of European automobile design”, Hans Ledwinka’s involvement with the motor industry began as early as 1897 when he joined the Nesselsdorf wagon factory in Czechoslovakia at a time when that company was experimenting with building motor cars under licence from Benz. His involvement was to span five decades and there is little doubt that his close association with Ferdinand Porsche resulted in the Volkswagen ‘peoples car’ being significantly influenced by Ledwinka. Notable Ledwinka designs included the central tubular chassis frame of the Tatra, rear swinging half axles, rear-mounted air-cooled engines, independent suspension with jointless half axles and distinctive aerodynamic styling. Ledwinka’s masterpiece was the Tatra T87 which emerged from the Koprivanice factory in 1936. It was powered by a light alloy V8 cylinder, overhead camshaft, air-cooled engine, rear-mounted in a monocoque body/chassis construction with a traditional Tatra girder section chassis backbone. The licence for the aerodymanic body was acquired from the Budd Manufacturing Co. in Philadelphia where Ledwinka’s cousin Joseph had pioneered pressed steel panelling.
The four-cylinder Tatra Type T600 of post-war years bore all the hallmarks of Ledwinka’s drawing board with its opposed four-cylinder engine unit displacing 1,951cc and the general appearance and design clearly influenced by the T87. This left-hand drive Type T600 car is presented in blue livery with light grey pressed-steel wheels, and furnished with beige cloth to the interior. It appears to be to original specification in all major respects and is tidily presented. It was acquired for the Lips Collection in 1983 and following a period of museum display will reward the usual careful recommissioning.
