1970-71 Brabham -Novamator BT 28/35 Formula 3 Racing Single-Seater
Chassis no. BT35-5
The Formula 3-trim Brabham is one of the ultimate early 1970s models so rightly revered as having been one of the most effective of all this renowned marque’s ultra-lightweight yet immensely robust, good handling and highly competitive Formula 3 racing single-seater cars. The 1970 BT28 and 1971 BT35 designs were the last expression of the wonderfully effective, practical and easily repairable family of multi-tubular spaceframe Brabham racing cars created by Australian engineer Ron Tauranac’s Motor Racing Developments (MRD) company, which he had co-founded ten years earlier with double World Champion Driver, Jack Brabham.

This particular example has an early number, and is equipped as one of the so-called ‘screamer’ 1-litre Formula 3 cars which featured in such exciting race series of the late 1960s and 1970. For 1971 Formula 3 regulations changed to demand 1600cc power units with restricted air-intake area, and the BT35 superceded the BT28 for that year although the two models were very similar. As offered here this car is equipped with a slightly enlarged power unit which we understand is of almost 1,300cc capacity, while its original 1-litre block is offered with the Lot as a spare.

The Brabham BT28 was the best of the 1970 Formula 3 breed while the BT35 design was then manufactured in three different variants marketed for the 1971 racing season. The American SCCA version, the BT35A had inboard rear brakes as standard. The BT35B model was intended for Formula B/Atlantic racing, with outboard rear brakes as offered here. But it was the BT35C which attracted the largest order volume, some 27 of these Formula 3 cars being constructed, with 1-litre engines and Hewland Mark 8 gearboxes – as offered here.

All Brabham BT28s and 35s featured typically Tauranac multi-tubular spaceframe chassis frames, welded-up from steel stock with the cockpit area stiffened by sheet paneling. The all-detachable glassfibre body was formed in three sections. The BT35 was the last tube-framed Brabham to be produced in MRD’s famous Weylock works.

The Brabhams were described as having been "…the most practical buy for a top F3 man without special commitments to any particular marque".
This most attractively presented car is offered here in very good condition by a private French collector and historic racer who has owned it for 18 years. The car has been used for track-days and local hill-climbs, and it comes with a set of racing Michelin tyres, a spare polyester nose and its starter. The engine, recently serviced by the current owner, is race-ready.
