1973 Iso Grifo 7-Litre Coupe
Coachwork by Carrozzeria Bertone

Chassis no. GL320402
“For front-engined machismo at a bargain price, look no further than the 7-litre Iso Grifo – fastest and rarest of all the hybrid, American-engined heavyweights that proliferated in the Sixties.” – Classic Cars.

Bubblecar manufacturer Iso had joined the ranks of supercar constructors in 1962 with the launch of the Giotto Bizzarrini-designed Rivolta coupe, the Grifo’s ultimate ancestor. Styled by Bertone and powered by a 5.4-litre Chevrolet V8, the Rivolta employed a platform chassis featuring independent front suspension, De Dion rear axle and disc brakes all round. Developments included the Ghia-styled, Fidia four-door saloon, the Rivolta-replacement Lele and the short-wheelbase Grifo - the most successful Iso with 412 examples built. Produced between 1963 and 1974, the 'standard' Grifo used the small-block Chevrolet V8 in all but its final Ford-powered incarnation. Even the tamest Grifo came with 350bhp, which was good for around 160mph, and for the seriously speed addicted there was the exclusive, 400bhp, 180mph-plus 7-litre, just 90 of which were made.

Originally a 5.8-litre Ford-engined model, this left-hand drive Iso Grifo dates from the penultimate year of production and has the desirable ZF five-speed manual transmission. The car was sold new to Valentino, registered in Rome and then sold to Turin before being acquired by the present (third) owner in the 1980s, since when it has formed part of his private collection. Salvatore Diomante (Giotto Bizzarrini’s business partner in the 1960s/70s) rebuilt the mechanicals immediately before the car’s acquisition by the vendor. Diomante also installed a rebuilt 7-litre engine and up-rated the brakes. Never accident damaged, the vehicle is finished in metallic green with black leather interior and presented in very good condition in every respect. A mere 14,000-or-so kilometres have been covered since the engine’s installation, and the car features its original interior, good gearbox synchros and overhauled alternator. Offered with Monaco registration papers.
