The ex-Ronnie Peterson/ Malcolm Guthrie Racing Team
1970 March 702 Formula Racing Single-Seater
Chassis no. 702-1
During 1970 the most sensational newcomer on the single-seater racing car scene was March Engineering Ltd, who had emerged late in the previous season with a prototype Formula 3 car, and into the new year had produced brand-new designs not only for Formula 3 but also for Formulae 1 and 2 racing.

The Malcolm Guthrie team represented the factory and their cars were rapidly developed with more refined chassis, suspension and bodywork detailing. The works team’s number one driver was the hugely promising young Swedish star – Ronnie Peterson – and with him behind the steering wheel the new March 702 was always very competitive.

Peterson’s full flair blossomed in the Malcolm Guthrie-entered works 702s, and his 3rd place at Hockenheim, 4th at Imola, 5th at Langenlebarn in Austria, and two mid-season 6th places at Rouen and Ricard-Castellet were poor reward for some very fine drives, particularly towards the end of that year when the works cars were better developed.

In period the March 702 was powered by the ubiquitous Cosworth-Ford FVA 16-valve 1600cc power unit, driving through the Hewland FT200 gearbox. This particular car was actually displayed in 2003 as an exhibition car at the Paris Salon, less engine, and fixed to the ceiling!

We are advised that a Cosworth FVA 1.6-litre engine has since been installed, completely rebuilt to original specification, started-up and run in the car. It drives by the familiar contemporary Hewland FT200 transaxle gearbox. We further understand that the car has not been driven nor tested since due to a change of plans. This important Formula 2 car is offered here with an extra set of wheels and tyres.
