Footnotes

  • Carlo Borsetti established his reputation as a painter of grand rococo fresco schemes, particularly in his native region of the Valsesiana, around Novara. He was the pupil of Giovanni Antonio de Grott, a Fleming who adopted the region as his own and worked intensively at Varallo. Early in his career, Borsetti was involved with the renovations begun in the early years of the 18th century at the Sacro Monte at Varallo. In 1723, he frescoed there the Porta Aurea and in 1724 the Cappella della Pianaccia. He was to return to Varallo in 1745 to paint the Gloria di San Gaudenzio in the Collegiata.
The figures on our double-sided sheet were probably intended for one of Borsetti's many impressive ceiling decorations in the region.
