Footnotes

  • The present drawing appears to be a preparatory work for a lost oil painting by Domenico Piola. A version of this painting attributed to the master - but more likely to be a studio work - was sold at Christie’s East on 26 March 1982, lot 59. Another drawing by Piola of the same subject but different in composition is conserved in the Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart (inv. No. 6366; Gernsheim photo no. 64 637). It is believed that the present sheet belonged to the collection of 3 500 drawings owned by the curator of the Galleria Borghese, Giovanni Piancastelli. In 1901, part of this collection was sold to the new Cooper Union Museum for the Arts of Decoration, New York (now the Cooper-Hewitt Museum). Another group of drawings from this same collection was sold in 1904 to Edward and Mary Brandegree – the present drawing may have been included in this particular sale. Many of the Brandegree drawings eventually entered the collection of the Cooper-Hewitt Museum.
