1937 Wolseley 16hp Series II Saloon
Registration no. BEL 242A
Chassis no. 216/2489
Engine no. 2516
Wolseley entered the 1930s in the personal ownership of William Morris, passing into the control of Morris Motors when the Nuffield Group re-organised in 1935. From then on its products were more closely related to their Morris cousins mechanically, while retaining Wolseley’s own overhead-camshaft engines and characteristically more luxurious interiors. The overhead cam was soon gone, though Wolseley did at least enjoy the advantage of having the overhead-valve versions of Morris’s sidevalve engines. Introduced in 1935, the Series II 16hp model was built on the 117” wheelbase chassis and powered by a twin carburettor, 2.1-litre, six-cylinder engine. When Wolseley rationalised its range in 1937, 21hp and 25hp saloon models joined the 16hp on the latter’s shorter chassis, and this mildly face-lifted trio continued in production in Series III guise until 1939.
This Wolseley 16hp saloon has been in present ownership since 1977, its previous history being unknown. The car was purchased with a seized engine and fitted with new pistons at that time, since when only a limited mileage has been covered. The private vendor advises us that the car is in running order but in need of extensive renovation. Finished in blue/black with blue leather interior, it is offered with MoT to July 2005 and Swansea V5 registration document. Sold strictly as viewed.
