There’s no denying Accland Geddes’ luxury sportscar project was ambitious, but sadly, the reality did not live up to expectations, chiefly because the entrepreneurial Geddes had no prior experience of motor manufacturing. Geddes founded Britannia Cars in December 1957, recruiting AC Ace creator John Tojeiro, who came up with an all-independently suspended chassis similar to that of AC’s Le Mans prototype. Motive power was supplied by a 2.6-litre, six-cylinder, Ford Zephyr engine fitted with a Raymond Mays 12-port alloy cylinder head and driving via a Moss four-speed, close-ratio, overdrive gearbox. After the prototype chassis had been bodied in aluminium by FLM (Panelcraft) Ltd, only a tiny handful of additional, glassfibre-bodied cars was completed before the receivers were called in. Britannia output is believed to have totalled just four ‘production’ cars in addition to the original prototype, which is offered here.
Rescued from obscurity by Duncan Rabagliati, this car was restored in 1999/2000 by the present owner, an historic rallyist. Refurbishment included shot blasting and painting the chassis, rebuilding the brakes, suspension, engine and transmission, and re-wiring the electrics. The bodyshell was bare-metal re-sprayed and new carpets fitted to the interior, which retains its original leather-upholstered seats. Since completion in May 2000, ‘158 HYY’ has twice taken part in the Goodwood Revival Meeting, was entered in the Louis Vuitton Concours in 2000 and featured in the October 2003 edition of Classic & Sportscar magazine, covering fewer than 1,000 miles in the process. Shortcomings noted in the road test have since been addressed, the clutch having been adjusted, the brakes skimmed and a front anti-roll bar fitted. Finished in silver/pewter with navy blue interior, this rare and fascinating ‘might-have-been’ is offered with road fund licence to April 2005, MoT to August 2005 and Swansea V5 registration document. An original Raymond Mays cylinder head, inlet manifold, 3x SU carburettors and cast exhaust manifold are included in the sale.
