“Motor tried an example of the [XK150 S fixed-head coupe] that August…The testers found that it was the fastest closed car that their journal had ever tested – at 131 mph it was only 12 mph slower than the overtly racing C-Type tried in 1951… Speed, however, was not everything, and the XK150S matched it with remarkable acceleration.” – Lord Montagu of Beaulieu, ‘Jaguar’, 1990

One of the rarest of all the ‘XK’ Jaguars, just 150 examples of the 3.8 ‘S’ version of the fixed-head XK150 coupe with the Weslake-developed ‘straight-port’ head were built in the model’s 1959-61 production span.

This unique and quite extraordinary example of the ultimate thoroughbred Jaguar ‘XK’ series, the ‘S’ specification XK150 – was a unique prototype which conformed perfectly to the requirements of Vintage Sports Car Club, ERA racing luminary Douglas Hull.

This 3.8-litre ‘S’-specification car was built new by Jaguar and completed on October 23, 1959, as is confirmed by the accompanying Jaguar-Daimler Heritage Trust certificate. It was despatched from the factory at Allesley on October 30 1959 and supplied new to Henly’s of Manchester. It was finished in red livery with cream interior furnishing and trim, and went to serving Royal Air Force officer Douglas Hull.

As offered here ‘6797N’ is equipped with a full 3.8-litre XK-series engine which is described as having completed only some 890 kilometres since last rebuilt. We understand that no substantial modifications have been made to the car from its original specification, and it has been restored sympathetically with considerable attention paid to retaining absolutely as many original parts as was considered possible by the present vendor.

Douglas Hull was a very fine driver and he campaigned the ex-Reggie Tongue ERA ‘R11B’ – which he shared with Arthur Jeddere-Fisher - widely from 1958 to the end of the 1961 racing season, with this extremely powerful and practical Jaguar XK150S Estate performing duty as his personal transport and tender car during much of that period.

Douglas Hull’s ERA was the last to be entered in a national competitive event of contemporary stature, the 1959 RAC British Hill-Climb Championship, in which he finished sixth with the car. His younger brother Peter Hull wrote a book entitled ‘Racing an Historic Car’ in which he detailed exploits with ‘R11B’ during the 1958-59 seasons, and painted a compelling pictures of the joys, trials and tribulations of pursuing such a ‘hobby’!

Peter Hull – later the hugely popular and well-known Secretary of the Vintage Sports Car Club and a leading Alfa Romeo marque authority – actually competed in ‘6797N’ now offered here in several events, including the VSCC’s renowned Silverstone circuit race meetings.
