1970s Mallock U2 Type 15/24 Sports-Racing Spider
This 2-litre Mallock U2 is described by the vendor as a Mark 15/24 and is described him as being in generally ‘good’ order while the body panelling’s yellow paintwork is characterised as being “good but old”.

Major Arthur Mallock began motor racing as a hobby before launching the family business designing, developing and manufacturing the long U2 series of club-racing cars, ‘U2’ being adopted on the basis that ‘You Too’ can go motor racing.

Arthur Mallock built his first car while still in his teens, while his second was constructed around four bed girders which cost tuppence-ha’penny each and was powered by a 350cc Triumph twin-cylinder motorcycle engine which he bought for £1 15s.

With the advent of the 750 Motor Club’s 1172 Formula in 1953 Mallock joined in with an old side-valve Ford engine and in 1958 the first Mallock U2 emerged based upon a lightweight spaceframe chassis and in 1959 it carried him to many race wins, and the Ford Championship of Ireland. In 1960 a Formula Junior U2 appeared, a replica was built for John Harwood and customers were quoted £48.50 for a bare chassis or £75 for one fully-panelled.

In 1965 the new Clubman’s Formula class was launched, U2 customer David Wragg won the inaugural Championship title and the 1966 U2 Mark 6 attracted a queue of customers. The Mallock U2 theme was subsequently developed to embrace Sports Racing 1700 and Sports 1600, wishbones replaced front swing axles and de Dion rear suspensions were adopted in some models. The Mark 15 was the 1974 Clubman’s Formula model with de Dion rear suspension, while the Mark 24 emerged in the mid-1980s.
