The Ex-Denis Jenkisnon (‘Jenks’)
c.1963 Triumph 650cc Sprinter ‘Greenie’
Engine no. 6T 76839
‘Jenks’ commenced this project in November 1963 with a costing of the various components as detailed in his accompanying notebook. The frame was home-made; the lightweight front fork from an Velocette LE; the 2” front rim laced to a BSA Bantam hub/brake; the rear hub/brake Norton; and the 4.00 rear tyre that of a racing sidecar. For the engine there was really only one choice - a Triumph twin - while the gearbox was another special-builders’ favourite - a four-speed Norton ‘laid-down’ unit from a racing Manx. Jenks rode the bike at various sprint and drag racing venues including Duxford, Gravely, Swindon, Debdon and the 1964 Dragfest at Blackbushe.

Jenks transplanted the engine and transmission into the TriBSA hillclimb special in 1976, the rolling chassis of the sprinter being consigned to one of his many sheds for over 20 years. He left much of his motorcycle collection to a friend who, after Jenks’s passing, contacted the owner of the TriBSA. The latter agreed to give the sprinter’s remains a good home, subsequently rebuilding the machine to as near to its original condition as possible. A replacement engine, gearbox, clutch and chains were installed, a new exhaust system fabricated and new tyres fitted. The bike as it stands today runs on methanol via a Weber 40DCOE carburettor, using jet sizes specified by Jenks in his notebook, and has run at the Brighton Speed Trials, Wroughton and Eelmoor, and been displayed on a number of occasions at the BEN Lynwood Centre in Ascot where Jenks spent his last days. The private vendor describes the machine as in generally good condition but advises that the gearbox needs attention.
