Lot 611
Roy Nockolds, 'Old No.7 at Le Mans 1927', commissioned by Dr Benjafield,

Sold for £ 5,175 (US$ 6,514) inc. premium
Roy Nockolds, 'Old No.7 at Le Mans 1927', commissioned by Dr Benjafield,
mixed media, depicting S C H Davis in 'Old No.7,' the victorious 3 litre Bentley, at the end of the Mulsanne Straight, following the White House crash, 55 x 40cm (21.5 x 15.75ins), mounted, framed and glazed.

Footnotes

  • After the crash at the White House, where two of the three Bentleys racing were already left unable to continue, Sammy Davis managed to brake Old No.7 hard enough to avoid the same fate. The only damage to the car was the front offside wing and headlamp. 'It was a dramatic moment when Davis came up to the pit....Swiftly he changed his wheel, saw that his wing and lamps were in order and dashed off for six more laps on wet and slippery roads. Then he came in, as it was Benjafield's turn to drive, and the bacteriologist-cum-race-driver took over the car. It requires a great deal of nerve to take over a car that you know has been in a crash...Yet Dr Benjafield leapt into the driving seat and went off smiling, obviously enjoying every moment of the race.'
