1931 Daimler Type Q 16/20hp Owner-Driver Saloon
Coachwork by Coachwork by Mulliners Ltd of Birmingham

Registration no. VT 6578
Chassis no. 32990
Engine no. 55760
From the earliest days of the British motor industry the marque Daimler had received Royal patronage and with engineering quality ranked alongside that of Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Lanchester and Napier, the company prospered with a client bank from the highest echelons of society. Although Daimler manufactured its own coachwork, many of its valued customers demanded bespoke coachwork from their favoured coachbuilders with whom they had dealt since the days of horse-drawn vehicles. Daimler had adopted the Knight double-sleeve valve engine as early as 1908 and the Type Q 16/20, first offered in March 1931, was powered by a 2,648cc, six cylinder engine of that design, featuring also a four-speed, pre-selector gearbox and fluid flywheel, again idiosyncrasies favoured by Daimler. The Type Q 16/20 was a luxury car in miniature, following the fashion set by Rolls-Royce with their 20hp and Lanchester with their 21hp offerings. It was aimed very much at the owner-driver and perhaps also as a suitable car for her ladyship to drive.
This car is believed to have been first owned by a titled lady in The Potteries, being first registered in Stoke-on-Trent, and the coachwork by Arthur Mulliner Ltd of Birmingham is of the highest quality, incorporating such features as Rotax lighting, Jaeger instrumentation, Weymann-patent leather-covered top and the interior furnished in best quality hide with walnut-veneered door cappings and dashboard. Passenger comforts include silk pulls to the rear, smoker’s companions and twin interior courtesy lights, along with fully adjustable front seats.
This car has in recent years been the subject of a major restoration to coachwork with new blue over black livery with fine red coachlining, superb blue leather upholstery, grey headlining and new leather bound carpets. The engine has recently been the subject of a major overhaul and the radiator serviced. This fine and rare example of the Type Q 16/20 is offered with a Swansea V5 registration document and current MoT certificate.
