Wolseley entered the 1930s in the personal ownership of William Morris, passing into the control of Morris Motors when the Nuffield Group re-organised in 1935. Throughout this period the company's top-of-the-range model was the 21/60. Introduced in 1930 and powered by a 2,677cc, seven-bearing, overhead-camshaft six mated to a four-speed gearbox with central control, the 21/60 underwent a major styling revision in 1933 and remained in production until 1935, by which time 3,213 cars of all types had been made. Later versions featured electric fuel pumps, freewheel gearboxes and Startix automatic starters.
The Messenger all-steel saloon was built with the export market in mind, and to prove the model's suitability for colonial duty a team of seven was entered in the 1930 African Safari rally. This right-hand drive export model was built in June/July 1930 and despatched to New Zealand in September that same year. The vehicle's accompanying BMIHT Production Certificate records that it was delivered new fitted with artillery wheels, County (De-Luxe) equipment and chrome-plated fittings. The car returned to the UK in 1992 and was purchased at auction by the present owner in December 2000. At that time it was recorded that the engine had been completely rebuilt by Palmer Engineering in 1998 and serviced by them ever since. In 1992 the car was rewired and subsequently fitted with a new stainless-steel exhaust system, all new tyres, boot rack and luggage trunk. Finished in blue/black with matching leather interior, the vehicle is presented in good condition throughout and offered with sundry invoices and Swansea V5 registration document.
