Footnotes

  • The following extract is from Dr. Gordon Mitchell's biography of his father 'R.J. Mitchell - Schooldays to Spitfire'.

"One day in 1936, father met at his golf club a Mr A.E. Payne, who turned out to be a technical representative of a watch-importing concern. Father told him that his watch always let him down when he played golf and so Mr Payne obtained a better one for him with a new type of shockproof movement. He was delighted with it and having paid for it, gave Mr Payne his old watch, a services navigator.
During the war, Mr Payne spent four years as an inspector on Spitfire salavage and repairs and then many years later in 1964 he wrote a letter to Flight International saying he had this watch which belonged to my father and he would be glad to give it to the person who made the higest bid for it, the money to go to the RAF Benevolent Fund. A Mrs Falconer from Stroud in Gloucestershire."

The letters that accompany this watch confirm the events that led to the current ownership by the vendor.
