Footnotes

  • Thomas Russell was born in Norwich, making the Norfolk-born John Smart the obvious choice to paint his portrait. His father, William Russell, was a prosperous merchant of that city and of London, active in the whalebone trade and having interests in the West Indies. His grandfather Thomas Russell’s memorial in the church at Maddermarket, Norwich, bears the coat of arms of the Russells of Woburn (Bedford). The relationship to the senior branch of the Russell family is not clear, but it was close enough for the Russell’s London house to be in King Street, Covent Garden, in the Bedford estate. William Russell bought the fine property of Barningham Hall, Norfolk, in 1759 so Thomas, the second son, would have been largely bought up there.
The present lot possibly commemorates Thomas Russell's first marriage, in his 21st year. His second wife was Jane Hutchinson of Ipswich. Thomas was a member of the circle that included William Windham (later a member of the Ministry of All The Talents) and David Garrick, then at his height of fame as an actor-manager.
