  • Elizabeth was the sister of Henry Hake Seward (see lot 167). She married in 1803 at St. Georges Hanover Square, as his 2nd wife, Matthews Beachcroft (see lot 134). She is buried at West Wickham..
    The entry in William Wood's sitter book reads 5987 Miss Seward, of ------ first cousin of the preceding (Elizabeth)/ On Se**rds' warm coloured Ivory; rub'd with coarse glass paper & wash'd/ Complexion is fair, but rather pale and insipid/ Composed of 323, 30, 65, 477, 211, 180, 56, 278 & 324/ 8g white/ Not breath'd on, or groun'd; excepting about features/ Upper part of ground in 176 & 323; the lower contains some 334 & 194/ Hair is of 65 & 169/ Beg 23 Apr 1803 Del'd 10 June 10 Gs/ Set by Gray Sackville Str. Wood also records a second version of the present lot, begun 24 July 1803 and delivered on 23 August. The 'preceding' sitter to whom Wood refers as Miss Seward's cousin is Kitty Beachcroft (possibly the sitter of lot 135). Elizabeth's mother was also painted by Wood between 28 September 1803 and 12 June 1804 (folio 6029).
