Footnotes

  • In classical antiquity, a trophy celebrated military victory and was set up as a temporary monument on or near a battlefield with an inscription to a deity. Revived in the Renaissance, trophies decorated buildings connected with war and victory and during the 18th century their popularity as ornamental motifs grew to encompass other subjects including hunting, the theatre, fishing, astronomy, love, the sciences, pastoral life and music. By the 19th century they spread from architectural ornament to the decorative arts. This trophy brooch combines themes of music and theatre with Bacchic ornament as personification of the liberal arts.
