Literature : Ormond, R, 'Sir Edwin Landseer', London, 1981, plate 50.
"Of all the places where Landseer painted, his favourite sketching ground was the remote valley of Glenfeshie. The steep and distinctive shape of its hills can be seen in the backgrounds of many of his sketches (see no.50.) It was here that Landseer spent so much of his time with the Duchess of Bedford, who had constructed a series of rough huts as a retreat." (pp90)

Note : Landseer first visited Scotland in 1824, when he met Sir Walter Scott. Well documented as one of Queen Victoria's favourite artists, he was largely responsible - with Scott and Horatio McCulloch - for propagating the romanticised image of the Scottish Highlands which captured the world's imagination in the latter half of the 19thc.
