Footnotes

  • Although perhaps better known as a fashionable Royal Academy painter of the late 19th century, Leighton took up sculpture in the 1870's and today is regarded as the father of New Sculpture in England. The subject for Leighton's 'Sluggard' was Guieseppe Valona, a life model whose stretching after a long sitting inspired Leighton to model the pose in clay. After a plaster case was made, a life sized bronze model was completed in 1885 which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1886 and at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1889, where Leighton won a medal of honour. The life cast is now at Leighton House. A small plaster cast, although now longer in existence served as the model for an edition of bronze casts published by Arthur Collie who specialised in publishing bronze statuettes by leading sculptors and cast by the John Webb Singer foundry.
