Designed and built by Kenneth Gibbs, Shepperton on Thames, in 1947, Design No. 142, Boat No. 38. Constructed of clinker mahogany planking, copper fastened on oak timbers, with mahognay transom, galvanised steel centre plate and lifting rudder. This boat has benefited from a thoughtful and careful restoration, with several improvements: new decks of two layers of laminated timber, laid over new king post and beam, additional laminated timber frames at stress points, new forefoot and laminated mahogany keel, gunwale and rubbing strake. West System Epoxy treatment to clinker lands ensures a dry boat.

General arrangement: Foredeck of laid laminated timber planking. Narrow side decks with raised coaming to open cockpit with centreplate case, thwarts and side bench seating, wire and rope tackle to centreplate. Painted laminated timber floorboards, small aft deck with mainsheet horse and locker under, doubled transom. Fitted with a concealed sliding outboard bracket on the starboard quarter. Varnished wooden spars and original terylene gunter mainsail and jib, with wooden blocks and gunmetal fittings.

Inventory includes fenders, mooring spike and line, grapnel anchor, chain and warp, bailer, boathook, a pair of oars with galvanised rowlocks. Includes a two wheel Road Trailer with new tyres, recovery winch, lighting board, tiedown straps and mast crutch.

Footnotes

  • Designed by Gibbs to be suitable for both River and Estuary use, HALCYON was featured in YACHTING MONTHLY magazine in 1948, where a cruising, gunter rigged, and racing, bermudian rigged version was proposed. HALCYON H1 was pictured in the article. She was exhibited by Gibbs at the Festival of Britain in 1951 and in 1995 she was awarded the Freebody Restoration Prize at the Thames Traditional Boat Rally at Henley on Thames.
